This is a question that is almost as old as the internet itself. Perhaps you have heard of the latest legislation in the US, by the FCC, that tries to regulate ‘net neutrality’, in other words: defend the open internet. Amongst other things it governs blocking of websites, the (prohibited) use of ‘fast lanes’ for internet traffic and ‘payed prioritization.

Departing FCC chairman Tom Wheeler spoke about net neutrality in his final address.
